What is AI search visibility, and how do you measure it?

AI search visibility is how often, and how favorably, AI assistants mention your brand. Here is what it means, how to measure it and where to start.

More people now ask an AI assistant what to buy, who to hire and which tool to try. The assistant replies with a short written answer and names a few brands. If yours is one of them, you get considered. If it is not, you were never in the running, and you may not even know it.

That is what AI search visibility is about. This post explains what it means, which numbers are worth tracking and where to start this week.

What AI search visibility means

AI search visibility is how often, and how favorably, AI assistants mention your brand when someone asks a question you want to be the answer to. Assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity all do this, each in its own way.

There are two parts to it:

  • How often: are you named at all?
  • How favorably: when you are named, how are you described, and where in the answer do you appear?

How it differs from SEO rankings

Traditional search gives people a page of links. You can be result number seven and still get a visit. An AI answer works differently: there is one written reply with a handful of names in it. There is no page two, and no "ranking seventh". You are in the answer or you are not.

The answer can also change from one asking to the next, so a single check tells you very little. What you want is a view across many questions, repeated over time.

Why a mention matters even without a click

Someone who sees your name in an answer may never click a link. They may search for you later, ask a colleague about you or type your address straight into the browser. The mention did the persuading before they reached your site, and that kind of influence does not show up in a click report.

What to measure

Cockpit asks AI assistants the questions your customers ask, then reads the answers. These are the numbers that come out of that, and they are worth tracking whatever tool you use.

Mention rate

The share of AI answers that mention your brand. If you ask 100 relevant questions and 40 of the answers name you, your mention rate is 40%. It is the simplest measure and the best place to start. (That 40% is just an example to show the arithmetic, not real data.)

Position

Where in the answer your brand first appears. Being named first reads as the recommendation, while being named fourth reads as an also-ran. Lower is better: position 1 means you were mentioned first.

Sentiment

Being mentioned is not the same as being recommended. Sentiment looks at how the assistant describes you: warmly, neutrally or with caveats. "Cheaper, but limited" is a very different outcome from "the best choice for small teams".

Citations and competitors

Answers often point to sources such as review sites, comparison articles and your own pages. Knowing which sources get cited shows you where you need to earn a place. Seeing which competitors appear beside you shows who you are being compared with, and who gets named when you do not.

Why you need to look at each assistant

Each assistant draws on different sources and words its answers differently, so a brand can do well in one and be missing from another. Measure them separately rather than blending everything into one number. Otherwise a strong result in one place can hide a gap in another.

Where to start

You do not need a big project to get a first picture. Three steps, all doable this week:

  1. Check that AI can read your site. Run the free AEO audit for a score and a list of fixes. Then use the AI crawler checker to see whether your site is blocking the crawlers that assistants rely on.
  2. See what assistants say about you today. Try the free AI brand mention checker to find out whether you are named for the questions that matter.
  3. Write down the questions your buyers ask. The AI prompt generator suggests questions to start from. Keep the list, and ask the same questions again each month so you can see change instead of guessing.

Visibility in AI answers is not luck, and it is not a mystery. It is a set of numbers you can measure and then move. Start by finding out where you stand today, and track it over time so you know whether what you do is working.
